The 4th of July is just around the corner, and this year it falls on a Wednesday. That means two weekends of celebrations: one before and one after. And that's probably at the low end of the spectrum; I saw some fireworks as early as last weekend in the QC.

Fireworks are all good fun, but they're also terrifying for pets – particularly the pups of the house. OurQuadCities.com reports that this is the time that shelters in the area see a huge increase in lost dogs being brought in. The animals get scared and get loose, running anywhere they can to feel safe.

So, it's important to keep an eye on them; even in fenced areas, they can find a way to get out. Staff at the King's Harvest Animal Shelter recommend making sure your pet has a collar with your contact info, just in case they slip past you.
