I had to run over and see what was going on when I saw ambulances, fire trucks and police officers at Davenport Central High.

Yesterday, I was trying a new iced coffee (well, new for me anyway) from Red Band when I saw ambulances, the Davenport Fire Department, Iowa State Patrol and multiple police officers in the parking lot at Davenport Central High School.

As I got closer, I recognized the scene. Students in formal attire, 'blood' on their faces, wreckage and damaged cars. Thankfully, the Mom in me realized no one was actually injured, or my response would have been completely different.

Project Prom. I remember it from my own high school experience.

Project Prom is for high school juniors and seniors and alternates between Davenport schools in Iowa. Other schools in surrounding areas and in IL. also have this wonderful program that raises awareness of drunk driving during the prom season, in an emotional way, one students never forget.

Project Prom uses donated, wrecked vehicles and sets up the night before the reenactment. Students participate and act out a tragic scene of 45 percent report pressure to drink and drive or ride with someone who has been drinking. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than half of all fatal traffic crashes on typical prom and graduation weekends involve alcohol.a drunk driving accident. Local funeral homes donate the use of coffins and help conduct a fake memorial service for the ficticious death of a student.
