We're really going to be feeling the summer heat in the Quad Cities this weekend. There's an excessive heat warning for the area through 7 p.m. on Saturday night, with highs expected in triple digits.

When it comes to surviving the heat, water is crucial. I unfortunately felt the effects of dehydration this week and I would not recommend it. But everyone knows water is important. You might not know these other ways to keep yourself cool though.

    Ice your pulse points

    If at any point you do suddenly feel overwhelmed by the heat, this is a quick way to cool down. Put an ice pack to your pulse points on your wrists, neck and behind your knees. (My personal favorite is the neck, it's super quick). If that's not enough, go for the ankles too!

    Stick to light colors

    I'm totally guilty of wearing black jeans this week. But I think I'll be burying them in my closet this weekend because they are toasty. When it's as bad as it's supposed to be this weekend, stick to loose, light-colored clothing.

    The same thing goes for bedding. Put on the lightest sheets you own, both in material and color, and you'll sleep a lot easier – especially if you're the type who needs at least some kind of cover on while sleeping.

    Use your fridge for almost anything

    I have a lot of chocolate in my apartment. Right now, it's all in my fridge. This way, I avoid a mess in my pantry, and a sloppy snack. When I get home, it's the perfect treat to cool off a bit.

    But you can also use your fridge for other things, like your lotions or sheets. Cool lotions will help your feet after a long day, and putting slightly refrigerated sheets on your bed will make falling asleep a lot easier. It might be a little chilly with the air on, but your odds of sweating in the night are slimmer that way.

    Hang a wet sheet in front of an open window

    I've never actually tried this, but it makes sense. Wet a sheet and hang it in front of an open window; assuming there's a breeze. When the wind blows, it'll send an even cooler breeze into your apartment.

    This is particularly helpful for those who don't want to run up the air conditioning bill. Luckily we're right on the river; the odds of there being a breeze are much better.

    Stick to smaller meals

    This might be the hardest for me to stick to, but it's true. Eating a lot means digesting a lot, which heats your body up. So with this weekend's heat, it's best to stick to small, cooler meals throughout the day.
