After years of hoping and wishing, many Quad Citians were thrilled that an announcement had finally been made that Portillo's was coming to town.

The choosing of a location on 53rd near Elmore in Davenport was met with even more enthusiasm, but, it all could be premature.

According to a report in the Quad City Times, what seemed like a slam dunk has run into serious opposition from neighbors in the area who don't want to see the retail sector in the area expand next door.

Although the Davenport Planning Commission has recommended a zoning change, City Council still has to approve the rezoning of land that now is occupied by nine houses from residential to commercial, and neighbors are making their voices heard.

It all has to play out at the Council table, so it may still be a while before we can taste a Portillo's hot dog locally, if at all.
