Body Found in River Identified As Missing Galena, IL Woman

Authorities have identified the person whose body was found in the Mississippi River near Canton Sunday as a missing northern Illinois woman.

The Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Office issued a missing person report August 7th for 57 year old Laura Kowal of Galena, Illinois.

In a press release issued Monday, Sheriff Kevin Turner said that, although the physical description and identifiers of the body found in Lewis County Sunday were consistent with Kowal, a positive identification had not been made.

A positive ID is expected after an autopsy ordered by the Lewis County Coroner’s office.

The car Kowal had been driving was found in Warsaw, Illinois and was recovered by the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office.
