We have seen a good amount of melting over the past couple of days, but more snow is most likely about to get added to what we already have.

If you've been driving around the Quad Cities the past 36 hours, you've heard a lot of chopping and cutting of ice on sidewalks. Quad Citizens are trying to get what feels like the 9" layer of ice off of their sidewalk before more snow and ice makes its way to the QCA. Well, that next round of snow is in the pretty near future.

According to the National Weather Service of the Quad Cities, a large, slow moving winter storm system is expected to affect the Quad Cities area Thursday and Friday.

This winter storm will likely bring a wintry mix of precipitation Thursday. That wintry mix is expected to turn into snow showers and brisk, gusty winds Thursday night through Friday.

Officials say that the forecast confidence is increasing that much of eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois will see snowfall totals of 2 inches or more. They do say that it is too soon to predict more specific timing or snowfall amounts due to uncertainties with the developing storm system.

Right now, the forecast according to the National Weather Service for Thursday through Friday is:

  • Thursday
    • Rain, snow, and sleet before 3pm, then rain likely between 3pm and 5pm, then rain and snow likely after 5pm.
    • High near 37.
    • Southwest wind 5 to 15 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 20 mph.
    • Chance of precipitation is 80%. Little or no snow and sleet accumulation expected.
  • Thursday Night
    • A chance of rain and snow before 8pm, then a chance of snow.
    • Mostly cloudy, with a low around 28.
    • West wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.
    • Chance of precipitation is 40%.
  • Friday
    • A 50 percent chance of snow.
    • Cloudy, with a high near 33.
    • New snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.

We will keep you updated as the snow storm system moves closer to the Quad Cities.
