Those who regularly bike the Levee Bike Path west of the Arsenal Bridge will need to take a detour for a few weeks. Starting on Monday, construction will begin along that portion of the bike path which will close it to thru traffic while construction is going on.

In an announcement on social media on Thursday, the City of Rock Island announced that the Levee Bike Path, west of the Arsenal Bridge, will be closed to thru traffic.

Officials said that beginning at 7:00 a.m. on Monday, June 14, 2021, the Great River Trail Bike Path will be closed to thru traffic. It will be closed for the Levee Maintenance Riprap Placement Project just west of the Arsenal Bridge. This maintenance project is part of the City of Rock Island’s Flood Risk Management System (FRMS).

According to officials, the closure of the path is necessary for the safety of the crews working on the improvement, as well as the non-motorist traveling along the Great River Trail Bike Path.

The area under construction should be reopened on Monday, June 28, 2021, depending on if Mother Nature is kind enough to the crews.

Motorists should expect travel delays at or near this location. Crews and city officials ask that you follow all posted signs for detour directions when needed and watch for trucks entering and leaving the area.

The City of Rock Island apologized for any inconvenience due to this work and appreciates the patience and consideration of those affected by the construction, especially the non-motorists traveling public.
