As an animal-lover, stories like this are always sickening to hear.

The Blue Grass, Iowa Police Department shared on their Facebook page that a German Shepard was found abandoned by its owner in a ditch in Blue Grass on Tuesday morning.

This morning this German Shepherd was found, what appears to be abandoned in Blue Grass. This furbaby was accompanied by a large bag of dog food in the ditch. He/She was very skittish and didn't want to take a ride in the police car. We had no choice but to call our friends at the Humane Society of Scott County animal control to help us safely bring her/him to a safe place.

The police had the dog transported to the Humane Society, where he is available for adoption.

The HSSC had so much interest in the abandoned dog that they used the incident to help bring awareness to the number of shelter animals in need of a home.

We would also like to use this story as an opportunity to remind everyone in our community that a vast majority of the animals not only in our shelter, but at other shelters in the Quad Cities have also been abandoned, left behind, surrendered or neglected and are now in search of a new loving and responsible family.

The HSSC has a link on their Facebook page where you can donate to the shelter and help pay for medical procedures needed for animals pre-adoption, like life-saving surgeries, neutering, and shots.
